What to Expect at the Motorcycle Accident Scene

When you have been in an accident, once it is safe, you need to check everyone involved for injuries. Check yourself first, then the other passengers. As long as there are no obvious serious injuries, get everyone out of the vehicles and to a safe place and call the police.
Call the local police emergency services, 911 to have police and other emergency vehicles to the scene. Even if injuries are not immediately visible, medical services should be called to the scene to check all people involved. When you speak with the dispatcher, you need to let them know the basics of what has happened as well as if there are injuries that are readily visible.

If possible, exchange information with the other driver. If the other driver is argumentative or incapacitated, defer to the police officer. They can get the information for you. Make sure to get the other driver's name, telephone number, address, driver's license number and vehicle plate number. As well, you will need their insurance information. If the other driver avoids giving you the insurance information or tries to talk you out of reporting the accident, ask the police for the information.

If there are witnesses to the accident, ask them to write down what they saw. Also ask for their contact information in case more information is needed or given information needs to be confirmed. If they feel uncomfortable giving you the information, ask the police to interview them. The police will gather the appropriate information. If the information is given to you, make sure the witness signs the paper they have written their information down on.

The police will ask for a description of the accident. An easy addition to the verbal description is to draw a diagram for the police investigating the accident. Make sure to note the date, time and weather conditions. Also be sure to label vehicles and which directions all traffic involved were headed.

If possible, take pictures for the police report. Cell phone cameras are great for this because they can be emailed to the officer investigating the accident. A disposable camera kept in the glove compartment is also a good idea. Ask the police officer investigating the accident where to take or send the pictures.

Ask the police officer investigating the accident for his badge number as well as a business card. Also ask for the incident number so you may call the precinct for a copy of the accident report for your insurance company and lawyer.

Do not leave the scene until the investigating officer gives you the okay. Make sure to report the incident to your insurance company and provide them with all the information you collected from the scene.
